How Can I Be Sure Gameboy Colour, Advance & DS Era Pokemon Games Are Legit?

I am undergoing an adventure of sorts, delving deep into the code of the games and trying to discover something and prove a theory of mine. BUT I need to ensure all copies of the game I use re completely legit.
Besides spending a fortune on sealed copies on Ebay, how can I be sure the games are legit? Cex are useless at this sort of thing.
A few bullet points of what to look out for for each type of Cart would be GREATLY appreciated.
