[S2] Confused about each character's claim to the throne

Post Body

So I just started watching Game of Thrones, and it's such an amazing show. Still got a long way to go. After Lord Eddard realized that Joffrey was an illegitimate king, so many self-proclaimed Kings begun appearing. I understand that Stannis is the lawful heir, but it cannot be proven since genetic testing doesn't exist in Westeros. But why do Renly, Robb (The North), and Balon (The North and the Islands) suddenly feel as if they have a claim?
