We learned a lot about Littlefinger over the past few episodes, and up until now, Varys was largely absent from this season. What he did in S4E6 revealed a lot about him and hinted at a few possibilities.
I thought it was interesting that during the Small Council meeting, Varys mentioned that the Hound was spotted in the Riverlands, but he made no mention of Arya, who has been by the Hound's side for some time now. Is it possible that Varys is aware of Arya but isn't saying so?
Also, when he told the Small Council about Daenerys, I remember from Season 1 that he was meeting with Illyrio and making plans pertaining to her. Was he also behind Illyrio giving Dany the dragon eggs? I know Varys does everything for the good of the realm, but has he been secretly backing Dany this whole time? Does he think that she is what's actually good for the realm?
To add to that question, when Varys was talking to Oberyn in the throne room and said that without desire, one could be free to focus on other things (and then he looked at the Iron Throne), was he implying that his main focus, by whatever means necessary, is ensuring that the right person rules Westeros? If so, this is an interesting contrast to Littlefinger, who wants everything, including taking the throne for himself. Is it right to assume that Varys just wants the power that comes with putting the best ruler on the throne?
Finally, when Varys testifies against Tyrion during the trial, I saw it as a shrewd move by Varys in order for him to remain a player in the game. Varys testifies because it's what the realm is currently asking of him, and he has to stay relevant in order to effect any change later. When Varys tells Tyrion that he doesn't forget anything, is that a hint that he's concocting another plan to somehow help Tyrion?
Littlefinger has been the mastermind behind much of what's been happening around Westeros, but after this episode, I think Varys has been the catalyst behind a lot of current and upcoming events, as well.
