I work on MMOs for major companies in the games companies and to me, this means at least 2000 players playing the same game at the same time and the potential exists for all of them to interact at any given time.
Structurally, this means at least 4 pieces of software: a gateway server, an account/world server, a zone/instance server, and a client.
I am now seeing multiplayer games with as few as 4 players calling themselves MMO and no server or account management or player interactions, just a bunch of players fighting the same zombies.
What does MMO mean to you?
