What should I do to make my pixelart game background colours less discordant?

Post Body

The background stuff I made for my game keeps giving me a headache even after I turned the saturation down. It just doesn't feel like it matches at all!

Should I make the character darker? Make everything in the background the same colour just different saturations? Something that I'd like to emulate is Dead Cells, but I just can't wrap my head around how they plan their colours and palette beforehand. Are there any good resources that specifically target how to make these kinds of backgrounds more pleasing to the eye and less distracting?
