Trying to be the player I'd want to have
Post Body

It's easy to be a toxic player, I think, because it's common to complain about something as if the creators weren't there. But online, the creators are probably right there too, reading your comments. And in some cases it's just one person, who is working hard by themselves. So I want to think about how to be a good player, so that I can also judge when my fans are being genuine or abusive. Recently I realized some of my own bad habits and want to change them.

One thing is to share your fun and good experiences. Post and talk about fun things that happened in the game. I'm pretty sure that's what most of us want to see most (besides a full bank account)

Avoid general criticism. "The sewer level sucks" isn't useful. "I got lost in the sewer level and spent a lot of time running around doing nothing, and that wasn't fun" is much more clear and might lead to the level being improved.

Balance the sense of entitlement. Where you really mislead when you bought the game? Or did you start to want a feature that doesn't exist after you played for a while? How much fun did you have before you became frustrated or disappointed?

Also, distinguish if disappointment is from the story telling/game direction or from misleading advertising. The second is very bad, and I don't blame people for getting mad if they were mislead about the product. But if the story or gameplay isn't that great, it's better to still complain constructively rather than derisively.

So. What else makes a good player, or a bad player?
