Hey! Below are just some questions I have on making an actually good porn game (one that isn't the standard "Woops! Fell into dishwasher! Spam space to sex!"
I love to make stories and animations for the porn I make, and have been super inspired to make a game by things like Sogna's Viper.
Below are just some questions I had, for people who feel confident wnough to answer ^ ^
What's a good game-porn ratio? For example, do you think you'd get bored of a porn game if it was, say, only pornographic in cutscenes here and there, or would it be too much if every game over was a sex scene of sorts and you had unlock-able sex scenes based on skills?
Would it be better to have both sexes present in the game for porn scenes or just go all women / all men and market accordingly to people who'd be interested?
How would you go about marketing a porn game?
In the case of traditional website advertising, do you think anyone would click it or just assume it's bs/virus clickbate?
Is steam a good market to sell porn games or is there a better one?
Would it be worth it to have custom characters that change even in the cutscenes, or would you not care one way or another if your oc was in the game?
Let's say the game is at least 10 hours in a normal playthrough. Would $10 be too much for a porn game? $5? Hell, $1?
This is going to be my second game ever and my first kinda flopped, as it was a generic platformer I made when I first got good at game dev, so part of me wants to make it free to get my foot in the door and make a name for myself as a dev, but part of me also wants a better way to make rent and food. What would y'all be willing to pay for a polished porn game that clearly had story and plot and conflict and worldbuilding to it?
These are just a few questions I had -- if anything comes up I'll probably make another post for it :)
First, I wouldn't worry too much about the ratio as it would be specific to your game. To my understanding, theres porn games thats almost entirely story with some cutscenes here and there, but there's also games that revolve around sex, with almost none or no story at all. Based on what I see on Steam, both types of games people play.
Again, this comes down to what type of game you're making. Maybe there can be choices that lead to Man-Woman / Man-Man ect. I would guess that straight sex scenes would be more popular than same sex scenes, but ofc I have no idea.
Marketing wise, I would use in your face tactics. I don't play porn games, but you bet your ass I had to check out the Steam page for Sex with Hitler when I saw that. Generally, I feel based on what I see is you dont need to market these games the same way you'd market a shooter. You don't have to convince people that the game is balanced with great maps and modern features. I feel that it really comes down to the screenshots and how the game looks, and what type of game it is. You can't exactly buy ads for your game for the most part I imagine, so it's entirely first impressions.
Again, I don't play porn games. But if I did, I'd imagine I'd want something that has minimal story and is more of an interactive porn video. This type of game will also provide the longest lifespan for the game, as it can't exactly be finished.
The only place I see porn games, as opposed to an ad on an actual porn site, is legitimately Steam. So I do feel that's your best bet.
