How far is too far in fandom?

There are a lot of things I see in fandoms of all things that bother me, almost as many as delight. In all things there will be discussion, there will be people who like to try different things, there will be those who prefer eras over each other, but when does the defense become too far? There is bullying, there is anger, and there are a lot of cruelties over things as basic as mere preference of Doctor (not so much here, but in other fandoms this is rampant). I'm just curious as to the worst things you've seen and how to stop them.
