I think that RTD is referring to past Who as part of his return/ moving onto the next Doctor. Or as a plot device, hidden in plain sight.
Special 1: We see new functions of his sonic that seem "too much", summoning screens, forcefields, all things to make it more convincing or convinient, Etc. His psychic paper still refers to him with female pronouns. Has it not updated or are we in the Doctor's mind? The rest of the special: a space ship crashing into London. Aliens in the streets, U.N.I.T, the references to the shadow proclamation. It's like someone boiled down David Tennet's Who inti 1 episode.
Special 2: It's Midnight. It's the plot of the Tennet's episode Midnight. Trapped on a ship, self destruction, the Tardis not translating and disappearing. Again, it's like we used the same books a wrote different book reports.
Is it just consistent writing themes, or are we reliving a creative retelling of Dr. Who stories because the Celestial Toy Maker is bending reality?
Like a Zoo for the Doctor.
