Plugging in headphones mutes the phone microphone.

I am unable to make calls while my headphones are plugged in. The headphones I'm using do have a mic option but it is removable and thus not accessible at most times nor would I have the time to plug it in if it was.
I just recently upgraded from an iphone 6s and this has never been a problem with that model.
