This creature would be a matter of local folklore. Something people tell stories of but many do not believe. Afterall, if it's so powerful, why does it stay to it's one location? And why does it never reveal itself or even interact with males?
Well, turns out, the stories are true. Is it -actually- magical? Up for debate. Maybe just a rare species that doesn't leave it's one known safe place. All these things we can discuss.

As for you? So much open ended. You know the stories, but, do you believe in them? Did you happen upon the grove by accident, and are unknowingly about to be the next tribute to this lost creature? Did you lose a bet, and are now going to the shrine because your friends made you? Maybe, perhaps, are you a witch or seducer of dark arts, looking to gain power from this creature in negotiations? A deal?
