For all the vitriol thrown Bethany's way, there's so much coddling going on towards Dav. He does seem to be more palatable/socially aware, and their marriage doesn't seem to look great from the outside. And yes, the sex courses and sex posting can really veer into cringe territory. But Bethany is torn apart when it comes to her looks, her awkwardness, etc., and Dav is treated with kid gloves. In snarkers' fantasies he's apparently this close to deconstructing, the Bairds have sucked the life out of him, he'd reach new heights with a "good," supportive wife...

It's so parasocial and some of these commenters give me the vibes that they're barely suppressing a crush on Dav. So many veiled comments about how he's out of Bethany's league, for example. I feel like a lot of the hate directed towards Bethany is like this weird misogynistic takedown because she's unworthy of having a "uwu smol cinnamon roll" musical theater husband who's conventionally cute. Or they subtly imply he was hoodwinked into marrying her due to pressure from the Bairds and the fact that he's a couple years younger? Just pure fanfiction.
