There's so much grass...

Years ago I decided to border the monoculture lawn that came with my house with some wild areas. My theory was that with mowing 2 times each years the ground would become poor in nutrients and an ideal plot for a floral meadow. The monoculture lawn gave way to a way more diverse field pretty fast. The thing is the grasses are staying as dominant as ever. Does anybody have a clue how many years it takes to exhaust the ground or the grasses? I'd love to get some more flowers and colour in there.
