Using public transportation to get to work

Post Body

Hello. I love the idea of a society where we all use public transportation as a default. Right now I live in an area (St. Louis) with public transportation but as it stands it isn't good enough for me to get to work in a timely manner or even on time. I have to travel across city/state lines which likely just makes things worse.

It takes 1.5-2 hours to get to work using public transportation, whilst it takes 20 minutes when I drive.

Does anyone know if a public transportation system exists where people in general can travel similar distances without losing so much time in their day? How feasible is it to adopt the system in a city? What does the system look like in order to be efficient in terms of travel time?
