Interesting. Reuters is usually a fairly solid source, but in this case I am more inclined to believe local outlets.
South Africa‘s eNCA has been covering the story, interviewing the mother, lawyers, and local political organisers. They also refer to it having been a bakkie, not a tractor, see here. This also fits the situation that the guy was driving on the road and his wife was sitting next to him, as she stated in court.
Personally, I assume that Reuters just struggled with the meaning of ‚bakkie‘. The Independent, also in your yahoo source, states it was a truck.

I‘d be extremely surprised if that weren‘t the case.
Got to spend a bit over a year total in South Africa. I‘m white and the racist shit white South Africans have been comfortable saying to someone they‘ve just met, i.e. me, speaks volumes.
There seems to be this assumption that being white automatically makes you part of their racist in-group.
