Anti-biking hatred is finding its way into my Twitter feed with some regularity now; not sure if it's the algorithm or if it's on the rise. Either way, it depresses me a bit that the view of walking and biking is becoming extremely progressive-coded, although I guess what I hate more is that the rising message is that conservatives (sorry, "real Americans") hate bikes. It's still nascent, and of course cities are largely blue so the practical impact is still small, but I would hate it to become a full-fledged part of the culture war.
It doesn't have to be like that. I work in the legal department of a large manufacturing company. I bike to work, as do several other lawyers and even some board members. There's no class implication to it at all. So do a bunch of the most blue-collar workers we have (electricians, construction, etc). The vast majority of both arrives by train (where I live nearly every large employer is located near a train stop, regardless of whether the employer or the stop came first). We have between 5000-8000 parking spots for 21,000 employees. I realize there's a certain urbanism that has to happen on a wider scale for this to be doable, and I love that the US is taking real steps in that direction, but I don't see it continuing on this generational project if half the country is politicized into "bikes are gay."
I don't really have a suggestion here - this sub has been good about not being political, and I don't know what we could do to defuse it at the moment.
So I guess I came here to say "fuck you matt walsh (not the actor)"
