Animal drawn carriages, how environmentally friendly are they compared to cars?

Anyone know? Because I grew up around horses and cows, and I'm also disabled so I can't drive anyways and I've had too many close encounters as a pedestrian, so I'm already pre-disposed to hate cars lol....but I COULD drive something that doesn't move anywhere near as fast as cars do. There's also this whole not being able to afford a house/apartment thing and also my deep itch for adventure and exploration, and so like a covered wagon or one of those Romani carriages would be perfect for me to live out of.
It's a wonderful little fantasy I entertain myself with....even though I know it will never happen :/
