Can my diploma be my preferred name even if it’s not legally changed? [USA, VA]

So there’s an issue i’m having with filing for my name change (personal, not legal) and there’s a chance it won’t have gone through before we confirm names for high school diplomas.

if it matters, i do plan to change my name to what i want to put on said diploma. i don’t physically attend my high school, so i don’t know how trans friendly the school itself is, but in the state of Virginia is there anything stopping me legally from my diploma saying a name that is not currently mine? will having a currently processing name change help me?
