I think it's an interesting, important discussion that is needed, I'd love to hear other sides of the argument but any time I've tried to have a respectful conversation with anyone on tumblr or youtube about it shit hits the fan haha.
So I'm one of the people who believes being trans is a medical condition, that the way one knows they are trans is because of physical body gender dysphoria. Eg binary trans male having dysphoria with all female characteristics, non binary person having dysphoria with only some characteristics and none with others.
My question for people who disagree that trans people need dysphoria is, how do you know you are trans without it? I did not recognize my physical body dysphoria until after questioning my gender, which I began to do because of being uncomfortable with my gender role (my hair, clothing, make up, the way I was treated by others.) I was concerned for so many years that I just disliked my gender ROLE not my physical sex, until I discovered I had a lot of dysphoria about my body that I didn't know how to recognize before.
The reason I see a difference between these two discomforts is that one is biological and one is formed within society. If we lived in a world without gender roles, without pronouns and clothing and 100% equality, I would STILL need to physically transition as I would still need to change my sex characteristics to be comfortable.
For trans people with no physical dysphoria, how did you know transition was right for you? Do you think you would still transition if gender roles didn't exist?
*I am NOT a 'gatekeeper.' I am not trying to decide who is and isn't trans, I respect everybody's identity binary or not and am not trying to invalidate anybody's identity. I am just trying to understand another point of view and have a respectful conversation/ debate about this topic.
edit: Wow I didn't expect such a response! It's cool to finally see a real conversation about this and hearing lots of points of views.
