How to apply for jobs pre-name change?

Hello. I'm on mobile, excuse any possible formatting issues. I'm also a bit tipsy, so excuse any typos that may occur :)

I'm nonbinary but I plan on taking T without any real end goal, as well as top surgery down the line. I guess transmasculine would suit me, but I'm not one for indepth labels. I'm just a nonbinary butch. Hope that's alright with y'all binary trans folks - I think we share some experiences around gender.

Anyhow, I'm planning on moving after I hit one year at my job. I haven't changed my name (I'm in the USA, and my state is really strict with requirements around documents, even requiring signatures from people in your life saying you're doing this in good faith or something). So, I'm wondering, in either Iowa or Minnesota, how safe and legal would it be for me to use my preferred name on a resume or CV for jobs out there? I'm considering either moving to DSM or MLPS, but I lean to Des Moines right now.

I hear the city is more friendly to LGBT people than the rest of the state, and I've spent a lot of time in Iowa last year. Fell in love with DSM and the diversity there. If anyone has been to Blazing Saddles, you may have seen me in mid-2023 :)

Anyway, any advice with jobs? I assume it can't be much worse to be openly trans in a large Midwestern city than in the rural South. I don't think I'll go stealth unless it's around employment.
