How do I set up a router in different room?

My two in one frontier modem/router is set up in the kitchen, I have an old Cisco/Linksys router that I would like to set up back in my office on the other side of the house.
Can I just plug it into the wall and phone jack? Or does the router need to be connected to a modem?
I am just so confused when it comes to setting this kind of stuff up.
