Best substrate for planted tank, aquascaped.

Hey all!
I am starting to work on my tank today. What is the best substrate for a 40 gallon planted aquarium? Do you recommend sand over the substrate? Or is this all fish dependent?
Iām leaning towards a community tank with a few apistos or some sort of less aggressive cichlid, as my center piece.
Any input is appreciated. Iām new to this.
