Passé composé, passé simple, l'imparfait. When to use each one?

As part of my learning process I'm starting to write and try to think mostly in french. But I'm at a loss about the past tenses.
I know that for the passé composé I must conjugate either être or avoir, but I don't know when to use them.
So, when to use passé composé, when to use passé simple and when to use the imperfect?
