Magic is dead now. Marvel UB sets a new precedent. This sets the game down a path of no return that ends in death.
Post Body

Buying the rights to produce multiple marvel UB products had to have been absurdly expensive for WotC (or I should say Ha$bro). They are going to cut costs elsewhere hard to pay for it and will have to transition the way they treat the game heavily around UB. This marvel deal is a giant step in that direction. I think they will implement the following over the course of the next 3-5 years:

  • They will stop designing sets for draft, cutting design and playtesting costs and at the same time being able to reduce the number of cards in a set and the number of art pieces.
  • They will abandon all formats except EDH, where they can design whatever they want at any power level with little to no backlash for mistakes. (Cards that are too weak get used for casual decks, pet decks, and meme decks so are said to have a place in EDH. Cards that are too OP are said to have rule 0 to deal with them) Dropping all other formats means they can cut much of their current design and testing budget.
  • They will completely cut their own creative worldbuilding and lore budget, choosing to instead pay to license outside IPs.
  • 1v1 competitive support will cease and the PT will end.
  • Card quality will continue to remain terrible or get even worse
  • It will all start by making UB sets standard legal (Nobody plays standard anyways so who cares) and eventually transitioning to just having UB sets.

What this all looks like in the end is magic being treated like monopoly, or fortnite.

  • There wont be any formats mentioned anymore, everything will just be assumed to be for commander (Which will just be called Magic by now)
  • Competitive 1v1 wont be a thing anymore.
  • Every set will be a smaller undraftable UB set with almost no care put into design apart to make the cards stand out for commander.
  • R&D will be reduced to just be a few people in a closet.
  • They will have cut all ties and support for LGSs choosing to sell more profitably through amazon and big box stores.

The big thing in the end is that Ha$bro doesn't realize what MtG really is. The game doesn't make a good platform for repeatable branding slapped on it like monopoly. Its a deep, old, and complex game and requires organized play environments, well designed game pieces, and extremely dedicated players to flourish. Magic as it will become will fizzle out when their smaller than anticipated new player market tires of repeat buying and having to dive into thousands of cards. The only way it will survive is by dying as a game and becoming solely a collectible to appeal to the funco pop crowd.
