why did the freefolk invade the 7 kingdoms under the previous kings beyond the wall?

This time, under Mance Rayder, they attacked the Wall simply because their very lives are under threat from White Walkers. What about the previous times? What sort of impetus was there to attack the south previously? Perhaps there were previous White Walker incursions on Wildling territory?
