Recent P2 here and I feel like I've forgotten how to do this.
I've got a new wing and getting used to it, and the last few times I've flown, it's been virtually windless in the LZ. First flight, I found myself when I turned in to make my final approach, I felt like I was going to overshoot, so I came in with a little more brake then I'm used to, and then flared as hard as I could, but still hit hard, and really jacked up my ankle, and faceplanted. I went again, because I wanted to get that out of my head, only to have another hard landing and faceplant. So now my ankle is jacked up and my confidence is shaken and I'm dreading going out again.
Here's my approach--open to any feedback you have. I know this is largely by feel for you guys, but I feel like I need some objective numbers to get my feel back. 1) Final approach at about 20 m, no more turning to lose altitude or fix direction (is that a correct height?) 2) adjust descent if I think I'm going to overshoot or undershoot by adding or subtracting brake pressure 3) let up on brake pressure at about 2m to maybe 10 percent? 4) start to flare very slowly, then hard when my feet are about to hit
I've never done step 3 before, but I think it would have helped for me to have more aggressively braked to lose altitude than I did before letting some up to increase my speed and energy and room available to flare. I think I just increased my brake through the whole landing and then just didn't have enough left to effectively flare, leading to the hard landing.
Thoughts?
Oh another q: if my glide ratio is a little over 5, and I start my final approach at 20 m, I should visualize a spot about 100 m from where I want to land, yeah? I know this is a feel thing, but I think I need an objective number in my head to get the feel back. I'm not estimating well right now.
