How does mixing a bunch of different perfumes change the way they smell?

Could someone please shed some light on this? The country I live in has a very cold climate throughout the year, unlike a tropical country, and most days are without any sunlight. In a bid to extend the longevity, I mixed the fragrance in a rogue way (of course without expertise). I received nice compliments as the smell was very intricate, rich, and yet enigmatic.
