Can I clean a nib with a full cartridge installed?

I let my Platinum Preppy 03 sit idle for three months (mistake #1: don’t let a pen go unused for three months) and it’s not delivering ink smoothly. I assume the ink has dried some in the nib and it needs cleaning. The cartridge in the pen is almost new (besides the three months of sitting idle) and while I have plenty more and they’re not all that expensive, I’d hate to waste an almost-new cartridge if I don’t have to. I’m also reluctant to remove the cartridge and reinstall it later, because history shows that I am accident-prone. Any suggestions?
