After a fair bit of time not playing traditional turn based RPGs, I have been playing one recently (The Ruined King). While I am enjoying the game, I noticed a few things that sort of bugged me about the genre, and started to think about what I really wanted from a traditional turn based RPG. After some thought, I realized the first two Fossil Fighters, in many ways, embodied what I want most from turn based RPGs. Primarily:
- combat has reasonable depth created by the core rules of combat, not from each character having 10 different abilities you have to manage
- You aren't heavily penalized for swapping and trying new party members (revived Vivisaurs can be reasonably strong just from cleaning well, grinding isn't paramount)
- Team composition plays a major role in team's ability, over grinding or piloting of team
I completed the first two games many years ago. I tried a little bit of the one for 3DS, and correct me if I am wrong, but it is just an entirely different game (and from what I played, not what I am looking for).
What I am wondering is if anyone here knows of some other games that share the above properties with the first two Fossil Fighters? I should stress that I am specifically, talking about the above aspects. I like Fossil Fighters as a whole, but sharing the same theme or mini-game aspect are by no means a requirement of what I am looking for.
