You imagine incorrectly.
I was also excited about these when I first found out about them but from what I have heard from people who've actually used them, almost across the board, they are consumables. They will leak, especially if subjected to sustained use.
They're better for competition race guns and while I can't speak to how effective they are at reducing felt recoil, most people I know who've used them have been pretty "why bother?" on them.
Several companies make captured recoil springs at this point if the standard recoil spring displeases you in some way.
