Some mods to the FAMAR
Post Body

I have been working on a few upgrades to the FAMAR, specifically the lower profile FELIN variant. Don’t worry, I will be working on the standard handguard as well, with the goal of not only modifying the standard handguard to accept the upgraded sights, but also a set of files to adapt already printed standard handguards to accept the upgraded sights I added to the FELIN variant.

Anyway, the upgrades that I have made so far are removing and modifying the buttstock and double sling loop, and modifying it to be single sided and reversible. The front sling loop is also reversible, with a secondary attachment point added to a rail cover on the rear of the sight tower.

The front and rear sights have been raised and upgraded. The original sight height was too low for me to comfortably acquire a good sight picture. The front sight is now a thin post that can be raised and lowered by twisting the drum in the sight tower, and a side set screw locks it in place. The rear sights were swapped out for HK33 or G3 rear sights.

Finally, the pistol grip section was modified and the old pistol grip and trigger guard were discarded. I added an AR pistol grip mounting block, and two screw holes for mounting the section to the MLOK rail. I used a 1/4x28 threaded brass insert in the pistol grip mounting block, but that was a mistake. I will use an M5 threaded insert next time to avoid bowing the plastic.

There are a couple of other upgrades that I am in the process of working on now, the first being a NATO accessory rail that will be set between the front and rear sight, over the side charging handle, and the second being a safety selector that has detents for the FELIN variant.

I am looking forward to getting the upgrades fully worked out, as I am planning to do a full reprint of the rifle, with the receiver being printed in CF nylon, and non-stress bearing parts being printed in ABS .

I know that ABS is weaker than PLA , but when you have to deal with the temperatures in south Texas, PLA just has too low of a glass transition temperature.
