A few crash-related stats
Post Body

I'm just playing around with some data on crashes in the off-season. I've classified certain types of DNFs together as "crashes" (spun off, accident, collision, collision/crash damage).

For the stats below, I required that a driver made at least 10 starts.

The driver with the historically highest rate of crash DNFs is... Michael Andretti. He had 6 crashes in 13 starts (46%).

Here are all his accidents:

  1. South Africa: After stalling at the start, Andretti was trying to make up lost ground. He lost a wheel in a collision. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltcXPaNKOkE&t=40s

  2. Brazil: A monumental accident caused by Andretti pulling straight into the side of Berger in a braking zone. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sauXHREwfUo

  3. Europe: Andretti takes Wendlinger off, moments after teammate Senna makes the same move look easy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhjsMXuPbb0

  4. San Marino: Andretti locks the rears while pursuing Wendlinger, spins off, and has a hopeless attempt at recovery in wet grass. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8xyajkSBE4

  5. Britain: Andretti manages to spin off at the start at turn 1. There might have been contact involved, but if so it was probably caused by all the swerving. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LYTnTPEkK38

  6. Germany: This time Andretti completed 4 laps before tangling with another car. No good footage that I've found.

On top of this, you can find clips of him spinning or crashing in just about every race weekend during 1993 in other sessions.

Out of drivers who started a race since 2010, the two with the highest crash rates are Liuzzi (16 crash DNFs in 80 starts, 20%) and Sutil (24 in 128 starts, 19%).

If you're wondering about Maldonado, he's at 12 crash DNFs in 95 starts (13%). Mind you, he survived a lot of his collisions...

Among current drivers, the lead is currently contested between Vandoorne (3 in 19, 16%), Stroll (3 in 20, 15%), Wehrlein (5 in 39, 13%), and Grosjean (15 in 123, 12%).

There are 17 drivers who have started at least 10 races and never crashed out.

Of these, only 3 drivers had at least 20 starts:

  1. Charles Pic (39 starts)
  2. Tony Maggs (25 starts)
  3. Jerome d'Ambrosio (20 starts)

There are 6 other drivers with crash rates lower than 3%

  1. Fangio (1 in 51 starts, 2.0%)
  2. Salvadori (1 in 46 starts, 2.1%)
  3. Gurney (2 in 86 starts, 2.3%)
  4. Gregory (1 in 37 starts, 2.7%)
  5. Spence (1 in 36 starts, 2.8%)
  6. Clark (2 in 72 starts, 2.8%)

Of currently active drivers, the lowest crash rate is closely contested between three drivers.

  1. Bottas (3 in 97, 3.1%)
  2. Ricciardo (4 in 129, 3.1%)
  3. Ocon (1 in 29, 3.4%)
