Hi /r/forhire,
My name's Dave. I recently graduated college with a couple degrees (one in History and one in Philosophy). I'm looking to build my portfolio of work in Ruby on Rails, as that's how I made a living in college and I find it to be pretty fun and challenging. Unfortunately, the majority of the projects I've worked on thus far have been developed under NDA, so I can't really show them off to employers. Also, my frontend skills are lacking from never actually having to do much frontend work (I've generally coded business/data analytics apps in the past), which is something I should probably rectify.
My proposal: You give me a coding task that you'd LIKE done, but don't NEED done RIGHT NOW. Be it to design your personal website or create a crazy industry-specific gem for something that's never been done before. I will hit the ground running on it and learn any associated technologies needed in the process. It might take a little while, but I'll be there to work with you every step of the way. In return, once the project is complete, you pay me whatever you think is fair for the end result I produce and allow me to use it in my portfolio.
Technologies I'm familiar with right out of the gate:
Ruby/Rails (3.2.13 & 4)
Python
Linux/UNIX systems
MySQL/MSSQL
Database design
API consumption
XML parsing
Data scraping
AWS
Asynchronous processing/threading (Redis/Resque)
Reporting
Gmail automation
Video transcoding
QR generation
Inventory management
Things I would like to learn:
*.JS frameworks
Docker
Responsive UI tricks
How to build gems
Testing frameworks
The latest and greatest buzzword-worthy tech
If I sound like someone you'd like to work with, please shoot me a PM and we can start a dialogue.
Yours,
