Question about manual tugging

I’m CI-3 currently and I’ve been manually tugging by rolling my skin into itself like a foreskin then gripping it with one hand pulling up and holding down my shaft tightly. I didn’t see it in the guide so I was wondering if it was a good technique also the guide seems to show erect penises do I have to be hard?
