Ive said this before but I find it weird in football and most team sports in general, that coaches, despite being highly paid for their talents tend to tactically copy one another.
Like why does virtually every coach prefer the 4-2-3-1? Before that - 4-4-2? How come we don't usually see new formations in football.. mostly just the same 2-4 formations recycled by all.. with the 4-2-3-1 being the overwhelming favorite. Its almost like everyone is waiting on Pep to innovate so they can copy.
It deeply bothers me because this is a trend in other sports too. And whenever someone does something new they are labelled a Madman or a Genius. But.. like.. shouldn't everyone be trying new things? Shouldn't every coach be thinking outside the box in order to earn a tactical advantage?
- Pep thought outside the box = TikiTaka
- Mourinho virtually creating the 4-2-3-1
- Klopp popularised gengenpress
- Tuchel popularised the 3-4-2-1 in possession teams
Im sure we can all think of another 50 examples.. But my point is that none of these ideas were popular.. it took managers thinking outside the box & trying something new in order to create tactics which are now standard. Yet why do so few coaches dare to go again with creativity? Why do they all play it safe. Is it to avoid criticim from the board, fans, and media?
What do you guys think? And do you agree with my take or see it differently?
Thx for reading.
