In my ninth (and possibly final) season at Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid absolutely bottled it to give me my second La Liga title. We had previously gotten second by one or two points twice during my tenure. After being 12 points behind Real for about half the season and looking like we would be battling for second with Barca and San Sebastian, we went on an absolute tear, not losing in La Liga after December 23.
I thought going into the last day of the season that there's no way Real will drop points against 19th place Cadiz, but Jude Bellingham got sent off in the 28th minute and they drew 2-2. I was so confused when the trophy presentation happened at the end of our game and didn't believe it until I saw the league table!
We had previously won the Copa del Rey over Real Madrid in an absolute defensive master class. And then we went on to win the Champions League in a penalty shootout stunner against Barcelona! This was my second Champions League victory, both coming against Barcelona. The previous one required a 119th minute goal from my backup striker Enzo Sternal, who has since moved on in my save. This time around, one of my former players and probably the best right back in the world, Jose Pesin, missed a penalty for Barcelona to cement it. All of this after we were tied 1-1 despite Barca being a man down for about 60 minutes of the game. Truly unbelievable season. I had to share it with someone who would understand.
Growing increasingly frustrated with battling against Real for titles all the time and losing, I was thinking about stepping down after this season and maybe going to Italy for a new challenge. But there's always that part of me that wants to stay because I hate leaving those young players I've built up. Apologies for the long post. Vamos Los Colchoneros!
