I like the game BUT I couldn't play more than 4 hours of BETA.
Post Body

My Specs:

  • i7-6700 3.4GHz
  • GTX 1060 6GB
  • 16 GB RAM
  • Samsung T5 Portable SSD - 500GB (For bigger/more demanding games)
  • AOC 24” Gaming Monitor, FreeSync, 1080p, 144Hz, 1ms

I have a mid tier PC, and I don't plan on upgrading. I kept textures on High, and put everything else on Medium. Had max actor distance, and about 30% on the rest. I can play other games including Fallout 4 for hours on end. After about 2 hours of 76 I started to feel lightheaded, after 4 I felt like another hour would make me throw up.

I like the game. There are things I would prefer they did differently (such as keep at least some NPC's), and overall I WANT to keep playing, but I'm not sure I can.

I have 4 main issues currently:

  • First of all the Console FOV makes me sick. Everything is so zoomed in its ridiculous. Walking up to pick up trucks to loot their trunk feels like I'm constantly leaning forward. My weapons take up way too much room on my screen. I feel like a Cyclops looking out of 1 eyeball. Even the simple act of turning 180 degrees takes longer than necessary.

  • The performance with fairly lowered settings still struggles to maintain 60 FPS. In certain areas, like small indoor locations it runs well, but everywhere else it jumps between 40 and 60. I'm not sure how long ago they ported from the console to PC, but I'm not sure they will be able to improve it much in 2 weeks. Perhaps mods/ini tweaks will be able to help eventually, but I'll have to wait till the last few BETA days to see.

  • (Edit: Apparently this will be fixed? Still what a hell of a bug to allow past testing.) Not prioritizing fixing "speed hacks" in a multiplayer game is lazy. While we know it is not a hack, watching people sprint past me at 2 or 3 times normal speed is ridiculous and un-immersive. Combine that with de-synced mobs who then teleport to me and get free attacks on me, all while avoiding my own attacks makes the game feel incredibly rushed.

  • The difference in lighting from high to medium is insane. While I don't like godrays, blur, or lens flare, high settings do look nice. However as soon as I lowered them to medium, most if not all god rays disappeared, and almost all the shadows started to pop in when getting close to them, and the entire color scheme of the game looked washed out. It's as if an 80% transparent grey filter was put over the screen. There was a literal line in the middle of my screen that marked the distance at which shadows/better lighting loaded in.

All that being said, this PC port really does look unfinished with all the missing features, the poor performance, and with less than 2 weeks left I'm not really sure Bethesda can get everything ironed out. I can't justify spending $60 on a game that makes me want to throw up after just 4 hours.

The worst part is, I like the game itself, from the gunplay, to the exploration, to the brand new leveling system.
