Starting fallout 3 again

So after many years I decided to play fallout 3 again on the Xbox 360. I wanted to sort of wander about at first, do side quests etc until I get all the dlc sorted.
My questions are
Is it worth connecting online to update the game or leave it and play straight from the disc with no updates
Where are the best places to head to and what's fun to do while avoiding the storyline
Obviously I'm going to do the radio tower so I can get that great sound track whole I play
