Airline reserve questions

So typically when one starts at a 121 carrier and gets the privilege of being reserve… Do you get paid for being on reserve? Sitting at the airport waiting to hopefully get on a flight? If you do, how does that work? Airlines say xx amount of hours a month guaranteed, are you getting paid for those hours the month whether you fly or not or are you guaranteed to fly those hours and get paid bc you flew?
