Water distance and height limitations?

New PPL here and looking forward to spending the rest of the summer in the Massachusetts Bay Area meaning I can rent out to various beaches. The other day I did a noble flight of 25 miles which wasn’t much but it was from coast of south shore mass to the tip of cape meaning for a couple miles there I was really too far from either shore for a glide able distance god forbid I have a failure.

What are some ways you would take this flight? Would you just go straight point to point or would you get a little more elevation before climbing out over the water
