I arrived in the USA in 2001, and a wedding present was 90 minutes in a Piper at the local school in Buffalo. Young 19 year old female air trafficer was my instructor. She asked what I wanted to do and I asked for some general handling (rate 1 and max rate,) stalls etc, then over to a nearby non-towered airport for some circuits and bumps. She laughed at my British slang for that.
We then returned to BUF on the ILS for 27. I asked, "What's the QNH?" She replied, "I used to know what that is, what is it?" Mr smartarse here replied, "The pressure measured at a station, corrected for temperature, and reduced to mean sea level using the ICAO formula." "Oh, altimeter...." That was my culture shock moment. LOL
I had fun, especially as she said, "You passed your PPL checkride there." Wow! As a long time helicopter pilot who hadn't flown fixed wing in a number of years that comment made my day.
