I currently have a set of some boots and neoprene guards that I use for wet wading with a generic poly sock under that. While this works amazingly well in the water I can't stand wearing it on land at all.
I have determined lack of drainage to be my main problem. After getting out of the water, I am carrying a half gallon of water with me. On a long walk back to the car that would likely do a number on my feet.
I thought about adding holes to drain the boots and socks but then I will have issues with sand getting in. Also the boot's soles are a bit thin. So I think I need to upgrade.
I could buy another set of neoprene socks with drainage but it seems like such a waste, also I don't like the extra soft feel they have. I prefer a firmer footing. I never wade in the winter and will likely never own waders.
I still want wading boots. Water shoes are not an acceptable footwear for the terrain on the bottom of a river in my area. They don't go high enough to protect my ankles and they have horrible tread. Same holds true for most fast drying hiking "boots." They are too low to cover the ankles.
I've been having trouble finding wet-wading boots. It looks like most of them were discontinued. so unfortunately I may have to give up on finding a dedicated wet-wading boot.
Do any of you have any experience getting wading boots sized for use without booties?
