I am going to hike in there this weekend and scope it out. Will fish too. Can't find much beta online other than a couple blogs. Anybody ever done it? Any thoughts on it?
As an off-roader I’ve been there dozens of times since the late ‘80’s. Three Jeep trails go down there (The Gulches), but they may or may not be open anymore. I haven’t been in a few years. The trails are great for off-roading. A lot of fun. Some easy spots and some challenges. If they are still open to vehicles you can take them down but I’d recommend you have some skills as an off-roader. And a capable vehicle. Two of the gulches go all the way to the river. Again though, some agency or another may have closed them again. Over the decades there has been some trail abuse and at least one rollover resulting in the death of the driver. At the bottom is beautiful water and a beautiful canyon. A fantastic place to be. As for the fishing - well I’ll say it’s good because you will be fishing in a beautiful area. As for the catching - there are some fish to be caught. I’ve never found the quantities to be very high. The quality is ok with an occasional ‘good one’. Personally I’d say going in there is more for the experience than for the fishery. But still - it’s fishing. And fishing is good right? The catching though, is a bit muted relative to the other fisheries in the general area.

I completely understand. Going into that canyon will alleviate a lot of the stress brought on by spending time at the popular fisheries. If you do decide to go in, hopefully you have good hiking experience and understand what items to bring with you. The weather always holds surprises. Plan on some slipping and sliding. As for the fishing - expect to use the typical trout fishing technique this time of year. Small flies and light lines. If you’re lucky you may get a midge hatch, BWO’s, Blue Duns etc. Sizes 22 to 32. Maybe even some PMD’s. The smallest tippet your skill set allows. Good luck and post pictures!
