Why do most Private Jets fly at higher altitudes than commercial airliners? i.e >40000ft/ 14000mtrs

Higher elevation means fewer chances of turbulence. Though not necessarily true ALWAYS, mostly true.

For crowded airspaces, airliners might have to follow certain routes for safety etc., flying higher you can mostly fly the way you want to, not needing to follow sky highways.

Also, better access to jet streams, and low to non existent wake turbulence caused by larger airplanes, so your airspeed might not be supersonic, but your groundspeed definitely can be, thus flying faster.
