preferred lubing method?

I tend to āactivateā my lube. Put a little strip or couple small drops on the opening a tiny drop on my dick and start.
Then after a little bit Iāll spray some water on the fleshlight or my dick to really get the lube a little more slippery. I feel like I shouldnāt need the water maybe Iām not distributing it evenly at the beginning or not using enough lube?
