Why does some cabal of Uber powerful people care that we all think the world not flat?

500 bc Greek philosophers wrote about a round earth. 300 bc Hellenistic figured out the circumference. What could have been going on back then that needed people to not know the earth was flat? Why would the most powerful people in the pre Christ era want a round world?
