I’m from Montreal and our new flag is amazing!!
The Fleur des Lys (top left) represents the French settlers who were the first to travel to the island, also the Fleur des Lys is the main symbol for Quebec.
The thistle (bottom left) represents the Scottish settlers.
The red rose (top right) is the Red Rose of Lancaster, representing the English settlers.
The shamrock (bottom right) represents the Irish settlers.
The red cross is a heraldic cross, which according to Montreal’s official website represents the “Christian motives and principles which governed the founders of the city.”
The White Pine in the middle is the new addition, before 2017 it was just everything mentioned before, but they added the White Pine to represent the First Nations Indigenous peoples, more specifically the Iroquois, who lived on the island before the settlers arrived.
Also, the Fleur des Lys and Red Rose of Lancaster being next to each other symbolizes the English-French communities that Montreal is famous for!
I just love this flag, it’s beautiful and the new version is just so cool :)
