Can somebody please explain carbs to me?

I’ve always followed it, but never fully understood it. All I really know about carbs is that they’re a source of energy in food. Why is someone who is attempting to lose weight in a caloric deficit supposedly meant to eat less carbs? Is it in order to enter ketosis? Or is it another reason? Is it harder to lose weight eating less calories but just as many carbs? Any help is appreciated!
