Our woods are full of various oaks and hickory. Big trees. I never cut healthy trees but occasionally one will be storm damaged or just die from drought, etc. Depending on where the tree is in the woods and how accessible it is, I sometimes buck it where it falls. If I can get my splitter in there, and a small trailer, I’ll spilt on site and haul the sticks to the stack.
Ideally, I’ll drag a log out of the woods with my tractor and buck and split next to the stack. This is the least labor intensive IF I can drag the log out.
Sometimes I have to hand carry bucks to the trail, then trailer them to the stack for splitting. This can be hard for an old man. Everything depends on where the tree is. I used to have a smaller lawn tractor that could navigate the winding walking trails in our woods but my current JD Garden tractor is too big. So, unfortunately, sometimes a great tree has to just lie there and rot.
Just wondering how you guys handle things.
