[Spoilers for pre timeskip Black Eagle route]

I'm currently on the mission where our strike team of Edelgard and Byleth and co. are seizing the monastery and I'm starting to fight some of the Knights and Students from the first part of the game. It seems ambiguous as to whether I'm actually killing them when I defeat them or if they're wounded but escaping. Is there any way to know for sure? That seems like a big deal for the story.
